The ladies often outshine the men on the red carpet, and the Met Gala on May 4th didn’t disappoint. All we’re hearing in the media are Beyoncé’s strategically bejeweled Givenchy Haute Couture number, Rihanna’s 10-foot fur-trimmed cape that took Guo Pei two years to make, and Sarah Jessica Parker’s flaming headdress that took much Twitter fire – where are the men?

The theme for this year’s Met Gala was China: Through the Looking Glass, and unfortunately the men didn’t rise up to the challenge. Most turned up in tuxedos – white tie, black tie, tails and all – with very conservative dabs of Eastern flair. Amongst those who donned a classic ensemble, George Clooney stood out as swoonworthy – and why are we not surprised?

Besides classy Amal in a scarlet Maison Margiela dress, Gorgeous George brought to the red carpet a gracious Giorgio Armani white tie topped with a red silk pocket square. He’s arguably our generation’s only true Hollywood leading man, but there’s definitely competition on the horizon.

Robert Pattinson showed up in a form-fitting Dior Homme three-piece, adding a flat tucked-under bowtie that echoed a Mandarin collar. However, it was The Fault In Our Stars sweetheart Ansel Elgort who deserved a standing ovation – he may be young, but his metallic, peak-lapelled Tom Ford tuxedo showed us just how much of a suave gentleman he can be. Most outstanding was his choice of footwear: traditional tux pumps with flat ribbons and silk dress socks. Boy, every inch of him just oozed sophistication.

Those who embraced the theme didn’t all do so well. Just when you thought Justin Bieber was getting all grown up, he arrives in a custom Balmain black coat embroidered in golden dragons over a side-buttoned shirt and textured cummerbund. Daring, but also right at home in a remake of the Kung-Fu Fighting music video.

Thank goodness for Michael B. Jordan, The Fantastic Four’s new Human Torch, who preserved embroidery’s good name with an iridescent emerald Dolce and Gabbana suit – which would’ve seemed too gaudy if not for the black Chinese florals stitched all over.
